Are Fishing Locations Public or Private? (iOS)

Learn how to check whether a fishing location is public or private using Land Layers on the map

Updated over 3 months ago

Before heading out, it’s helpful to know whether a fishing location is public or private. In Fishbox, you can check this directly on the map using the Land Layers.

ℹ️ Land access information is currently available for locations in the United States. We’re actively working on expanding coverage to more areas.

1. Open the Map tab, then tap the Map Settings (layers) icon

2. Scroll down to the Land Layers

In the Land Layers section, you’ll find two important options:

🟢 Public Access Lands

When this layer is turned on, the map will highlight areas based on public access levels, such as:

  • Open – Public access allowed (may have posted hours or rules)

  • Restricted – Access may require a permit or have specific conditions

  • Closed – No public access (e.g. protected areas, military land, land bank properties)

Tap the ⓘ info icon next to the layer to see a detailed explanation of access levels.

🔒 Private Lands

When enabled, this layer shows private land boundaries.

  • Use this layer to help avoid fishing on private property without permission

  • Parcel boundaries are shown for reference only and are not a legal survey

Tap the ⓘ info icon next to the layer to see additional information.

⚠️ Important: Land boundaries and access levels are shown for reference and may change. Always respect posted signs and private property, and verify local access rules before fishing.
